What is the Hybrid Project?
The Hybrid Project is an innovative, voluntary collaboration between designers, artists and film-makers, working together to explore 'Hybrid Design' (the fusion of two or more contrasting design aesthetics); it culminates with the production and completion of an exciting science fiction film 'AIR', directed by Emma Maclennan.
Production was based at the V&A Museum in London, where project originator Hayley Nebauer was recently Artist in Residence (2012-2013) in connection with their major exhibition 'Hollywood Costume'. As a key focus of her residency, Hayley initiated 'The Hybrid Project' to produce a polished example of how hybrid design can be used to create an exciting collaborative film.
Throughout the entire filmmaking process we worked with incredibly talented and highly experienced industry professionals, such as Production Designer Richard Selway (Art department credits include The Wolfman, Captain America and STardust) and Editor John Richards (The Prisoner, Doctor Who, Band of Brothers) along with burgeoning new talent to create an exciting and unique film – extending the ‘hybrid’ idea to our filmmaking ethos as well as the design process.

Project Outcome
The Hybrid Project is a purely creative endeavour – to experiment blending multiple disciplines of design, art and science to create a remarkable science fiction short film which is intended for submission to the most prestigious international film festivals in the hope that the film will be screened to audiences worldwide
'Air' will be submitted for consideration to some of the world's top film festivals, including:

A highlight is that a selection of work relating to the film as well as the film itself will be added to the V&A collections. Once AIR has completed film festival screenings, it will be shown to the public at the Museum.
Opportunities for involvement still exist for businesses, corporations and individuals to support the work of young people, filmmakers, artists and designers involved in the project. We are still seeking sponsorship to complete the film.
HYBRID PROJECT COLLABORATORS
There are many talented and wonderful people involved in the hybrid project, additional to the film crew. Experimental design labs were held every week at the V&A Museum in 2012 to explore hybrid design and science fiction aesthetics, researching and working from the V&A collections.
